Important Things to Know About Civil Construction

Massive buildings and constructions are a result of the skills and knowledge of the civil engineer. This falls in the category of civil constructions. It is a branch of engineering, and constructing dams, buildings, bridges, roads, airports, and canals fall under civil construction. Civil engineering is structural engineering that will sketch the layout of any building. According to the building regulations of different states and countries, all contractors need to pass their building plan from their municipality and such layouts must be designed and signed by the registered civil engineers.

Different Types of Work Performed in Civil Construction:

There are myriads of tasks performed and these works are not merely restricted to designing the layout of the building. Rather, they have many other important tasks to perform like the following

  1. Interacting with clients, government and other people related to a project

  2. Evaluating and studying the land on which the construction needs to be done

  3. Following the guidelines specified by the government and local bodies for building construction

  4. Cost estimation

  5. Supervising and monitoring the construction

  6. Tendering the contracts and hiring of contractors.

What Does a Civil Engineer Do?

To work in the civil construction industry, one has to get a civil engineering degree. They have different sets of work as their KRAs, here are a few of them :

  1. Survey the land

  2. Designing the structure of the building or public property as per the building regulations

  3. They need to make sure that their designs are made for giving maximum support to the foundation of the building.

  4. Prepare plans for residential buildings, commercial houses, public properties, and government establishments.

  5. They will choose the materials for the construction process.

  6. Measuring the safety of the environment and surrounding areas, and include the proper safety measurements in their building plans.

There are different types of civil engineers such as municipal engineers, chief civil engineers, structural engineers, and construction engineers transport engineers and water supply engineers. Basically, all of them are qualified and they have the same certificate of engineering, and these are their specializations only. So you can choose the engineer according to your needs or project type. On the other part, civil engineers may not evaluate the construction materials and contractors can use any building materials to reduce their construction cost. But if the contractor violates the building regulations, then the municipality can stop the construction process and send the clarification to the engineer.

What are the Different Jobs in this Industry?

There are myriad of career options to choose from, some of them include:

  1. Supervisor

  2. Demolition staff

  3. Roadmakers

  4. Welders

  5. Surveyors

  6. Concreters

  7. Dump truck operators

  8. Civil laborers

  9. Construction management

  10. Project managers

  11. Traffic management

  12. Excavator Staff

  13. Steel Fixers

  14. Loaders and others

Different Stages of Civil Construction:

Civil construction has different stages and each stage is evaluated by the engineers. They need to ensure that the project is completed on time. They need to inspect the property under construction.  They will schedule a timeline of each stage and then they will examine or inspect the under-construction property as per their schedules. In this case, they can locate the plant or the project site and examine the underground earthworks. Then they will evaluate the drainage systems and examine the pavement construction process.

Following are the Stages of Construction Work:

When a civil engineer is working on a project they include the following steps to ensure successful completion of a project :

  1. Conception phase- This is the input stage where ideation of project takes place.

  2. Designing stage- As apparent from the name, designing of the project involves forming the layout of the project based on the parameter set by the government and local authorities.

  3. Pre-construction stage- In this stage, various contractors and professionals are shortlisted for completion of the project, for example, project manager, contract administrator, field engineer, etc, Site examination is also a part of the pre-construction stage.

  4. Procurement stage- Sourcing of various resources for construction is an integral part of this stage.

  5. Construction stage- The actual on-field work begins in this stage.

  6. Post construction stage- This stage involves a thorough inspection of the building or project to check if it is ready to use.

So if you want to build your house with proper permission then you must prepare a structural plan for your building by a professional civil engineer. Then you need to submit your plan for civil construction to the municipality or concerned authority to get the required permission. Without taking prior permission from the municipality, you cannot start any construction work.
