Diesel Turbo – Bringing About a Change in The Engine World

Modern diesel turbo is not acknowledged according to its merit. Previously, old diesel turbo engines were not efficient and used to be extremely loud and give out a lot of smoke. But the newer diesel running engines are a lot more efficient with all the drawbacks almost eliminated. Yet, due to the performance of the previous models, the modern diesel turbos are not widely used. The popularity of using diesel engines in automobiles has been gradually increasing. But there are still a lot of misconceptions surrounding the benefits of a diesel turbo.

Firstly, to know how good a diesel turbo is, you need to know how it works. To explain simply, a diesel turbo has increased fuel efficiency due to the usage of forced injection technology. There are several other factors contributing to the increased efficiency. Turbo engines force extra dense air into the combustion chamber while the fuel is being ignited in the ignition chamber. With these forced air, the combustion results into powerful strokes of the piston. Exhaust air is mainly utilized in these processes and so there is less energy loss through air given out as exhaust. Also, with minimal exhaust expelled, the problem of releasing a lot of smoke is solved.

Advantages of Diesel Turbo:

  1. Fuel Economy: Diesel is extremely dense and is therefore highly energy efficient if combusted correctly. A diesel turbo is 25 to 30 percent more efficient than its similarly performing gasoline counterparts. Also, as diesel is cheaper than petrol, it is an added benefit. A diesel engine performance a lot better than the rest of the engines in terms of driving experience and speed to fuel consumption ratio.  Also, the diesel prices being lower than other gasoline fuels creates a bigger offset.

  2. Exceeding Torque: Diesel turbo operated automobiles have high power and torque. These automobiles are capable of bearing heavy weights and the high torque enables it to accelerate and tow heavy weights along with it easily. A diesel turbo is mainly used in pickup trucks and towing vehicles and thus they are easily able to haul huge trailers, campers, and automobiles. Huge trucks also use diesel turbo engines for the sake of picking up a good speed with huge cargos attached to their trailers. With higher efficiency, the fuel consumption is also low and that adds to the advantage.

  3. Cleaner Exhaust and Emissions: As mentioned before, diesel is a dense fuel. So, its combustion leaves behind lesser smoke and waste. Diesel engines do not give out much greenhouse gases during combustion. This reduces the pollution up to a large extent. Also, due to high fuel economy, less fuel is consumed compared to rest of the gasoline machines with the same rating, and this, in turn, leads to the emission of lesser carbon dioxide. Thus, with increasing pollution concerns, diesel turbos are a go to a solution with less pollution and more efficiency.

  4. No Need of Several Parts: as diesel is a self-igniting fuel, there is no need of an ignition system or a spark plug. This saves a lot of servicing costs and repair costs. Your automobile does not ever need ignition tune-ups or replacement of spark plugs. The possibilities sudden breakdown due to spark plug failure is also eliminated. With this, you save a lot on maintenance and repairs.

The only drawbacks that hover a diesel turbo are that it costs more than other similarly rated counterparts. The initial costs of buying a diesel engine run automobile is higher. Also, there may be performance problems at places with extremely low temperatures. But even after considering these drawbacks, a diesel turbo is a highly recommended machine for huge automobiles.
